Understanding the DOT Physical Exam

Everything You Need to Know

The acronym DOT in the title refers to the Department of Transportation, which is responsible for a test specifically created for Commercial Drivers under the jurisdiction of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). This exam is mandatory for all Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holders. To abide by legal requirements, a certified examiner such as those from Caya Health must conduct this test.

Who Needs to Take a DOT Exam?

While a DOT Physical Exam may not be necessary for all CDL jobs, it is required for the following positions:

  • Jobs that involve operating vehicles designed to accommodate more than fifteen people, such as school or charter buses.
  • Positions requiring the operation of vehicles built to hold over eight individuals.
  • Roles involving driving motor vehicles with a total combination weight rating, cumulative vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, or a combined total weight exceeding 10,000 pounds - this includes cross-country delivery trucks and UPS, FedEx or Amazon delivery vehicles.
  • Occupations that include driving hazardous materials vehicles necessitating hazard placards (e.g., gasoline or concrete trucks).
  • Any job where your employer mandates taking the DOT Exam.
